DHA were delighted to be approached to revisit the spectacular Glass Gallery at the V&A.
Designed in the 1990s, the current technology was superseded with many lamp failures, heat issues and a mix of lighting styles and colour temperatures, and glary floodlighting to the ceiling.
DHA wanted to refocus the visitor to the amazing collection of thousands of objects with a holistic low-energy scheme. Using custom LED bars from LEDFlex within all the cases, both vertically and horizontally, allowed a discreet consistent approach. A dated MR16 track system was replaced by the smaller 48v Zumtobel SuperSystem for lighting star objects.
The much-loved but end-of-life wire system that spans the gallery was re-designed by DHA and Stoane Lighting, to enable the original feel to be retained, but with higher quality LED fittings. They worked closely with the V&A to re-use housings and fixings and SI Electrical were able to install the complete scheme within four weeks without closing the gallery or removing any objects
The result allows the visitor to appreciate this unique collection in a brighter, cleaner environment, whilst reducing the V&A’s energy bill.
