Built on the site of the V&A’s old boiler house, this new subterranean exhibition space adds 1400 sqm of column-free exhibition space, a new entrance including the Sackler Courtyard, a shop and a cafe. DHA was involved in this project from the competition stage, working with AL_A and the V&A over a six-year period on this complex build. The column-free gallery ceiling supports the courtyard above and because of this has a complex folded form. The integrated lighting system was designed to work with the ceiling form and to integrate house lighting, emergency lighting and temporary exhibition lighting as well as hanging points and data.
