From July 2014, the London 2012 Cauldron goes on display in a new gallery at The Museum of London. The exhibition celebrates Thomas Heatherwick's cutting-edge design and the unforgettable moment it was revealed to the world during the Olympic opening ceremony. DHA Designs provided the lighting design for the exhibition.

Being asked to light the Olympic Cauldron exhibition for the Museum of London was a huge challenge.  We wanted to create a scheme that both referenced the amazing Opening Ceremony coup-de-theatre, and also allowed the exhibition visitor to see how the engineering was done.  Working closely with Thomas Heatherwick Studio and exhibition designers Drinkall Dean, the brief was to create a show that was in keeping with the adjacent AV footage of the Olympic and Paralympic Ceremonies.

Parts of the cauldron are displayed in both their open and vertical forms, and it seemed essential to integrate lighting into the petals to remind the visitor that these were aflame.   High level lighting allows the change of colour and focus that helps tell the story of the moment the world watched the Opening Ceremony.   The uplighting from below helps the visitor understand the engineering of the solution, which is complimented by the supporting exhibition and text.
